RETROVIR

Zidovudin - generic Retrovir - (also known as AZT or ZDV) was the first drug approved for the treatment of HIV. It is in a class of drugs called reverse transcriptase inhibitors (NRTIs) which also includes zalcitabine (Hivid), stavudine (Zerit), didanosine (Videx), and lamivudine (Epivir). The body breaks down these drugs into chemicals that stop HIV from infecting uninfected cells in the body, but they do not help cells that have already been infected with the virus. As people with HIV lose T4 cells - one of the immune systems main defenses - they become more likely to get infections and illnesses. Zidovudine does not kill existing HIV virus, and it is not a cure for HIV. Retrovir was approved by the FDA in 1987.

SIDE EFFECTS: The most severe side effects are a decrease in blood cells, muscle pain (myopathy) enlarged liver (hepatomegaly) and metabolic disturbance (lactic acidosis). Other side effects are chills, rash, confusion, dizziness, headache, diarrhea, nausea and weight loss.
